Pilot 4-H Veterinary Skill-a-thon was a success!

The skill-a-thon was a huge success being its first year and all. My complements go out to Laura Huebinger for all of her hard work, Dr. Buddy Faries and Tomeka Robinson for there help with the communication round and the 3 vet students who helped with the skills portion of the contest.

The results of the contest are as follows:

1st place was Team B - Sasha Beaty (Comanche County), Amelia Tanner (Williamson County), Amy Petry (Parker County) and Callie Hefner (Deaf Smith County).

2nd place was Team D - Mallorie Phelps (Johnson County), Megan Lyons (Harris County) and Jessica Epps (Williamson County).

3rd place was Team A - Sarah Sumbera (Harris County), Cheyenne Hagerman (Potter County), Kristen Olsovsky (Fayette County) and Kyle Kleckner (Parker County).

Congratulations to everyone for a job well done. We are looking forward to next year's competition!

AgriLife Extension veterinary camp readies for seventh year

SAN ANGELO – The West Texas Youth Veterinary Science Workshop, open to all Texas youth, will be June 21-25 at the Tom Green County 4-H Center in San Angelo.

The event is sponsored by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service offices in Sutton, Schleicher, Irion and Tom Green counties.

Pascual Hernandez, AgriLife Extension agent for Sutton County and the workshop’s coordinator, said the seven-year-old event introduces high school students to careers in veterinary science.

Instructors will include veterinarians, university and research faculty, and AgriLife Extension and Texas Animal Health Commission personnel.

Course topics will include: zoology, the Beef Quality Assurance Program, toxicology, parasitology, anesthesiology, anatomy, nutrition, first aid, beef feedlot health management, large and small animal practice, necropsy and horse medicine.

The workshop will include classroom study, lab work and field trips.

Enrollment is limited to 30 students, Hernandez said,

Participants must be of high school age, have an interest in veterinary science and be willing to work in teams.

Adult project guides are also needed, but must pass a background check before participating, Hernandez said.

Applications must be submitted to the AgriLife Extension office in Sutton County by May 29. Participants will be informed of their acceptance by June 5. Applications are available from any AgriLife Extension county office or by visiting http://sutton-co.tamu.edu .

Individual registration is $200 and due on June 10. In the event of cancellation, refunds will be offered in full until June 15, but the fee is non-refundable afterward.

Swine Flu Information

For more information regarding H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu) please check out or website at http://aevm.tamu.edu and looking under the title "Swine Flu". The CDC has a check list of what you can do to stay healthy.

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy

* Stay informed.
* Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
* Take everyday actions to stay healthy.
o Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
o Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
o Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
o Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
* Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
* Develop a family emergency plan as a precaution. This should include storing a supply of food, medicines, facemasks, alcohol-based hand rubs and other essential supplies.
* Call 1-800-CDC-INFO for more information.

CVM Open House is this week

The annual CVM Open House is going on this Saturday, April 25, 2009. The doors will open at 9:00 AM. This is a free event and there is no registration required. The Friday evening before we will host the 3rd Annual Statewide Veterinary Science Lesson. If you still need to register for this please call me at 979-862-2670.

Ok, so this morning I went through and updated the Centra classes through December. You need to check and make sure that you are enrolled in the course. If you are not, go ahead and enroll even if you know that you may not be able to make the scheduled time. If you are enrolled it is easier to watch the playback.
